We’ve talked before about the growing need for companies to thoroughly consider the vendors they do business with, and a recent attack on Australian FinTech company Latitude Financial has, unfortunately, given the world a demonstration of why this is so important.
The Melbourne-based financial firm, which offer loans, credit cards, and retail credit services, has reported a data breach seemingly caused by one of their suppliers leaking credit information. The resulting data breach, the biggest known hack on an Australian company this year, has compromised the personal information of hundreds of thousands of customers, with the final number of affected individuals not yet known.
The damage done to a company’s revenue and reputation from data breaches can be incalculable, and the growing need for heavy oversight on the data accessible to vendors is only becoming more important.
