And you probably said one this week.

Most discrimination doesn’t sound like discrimination.

It sounds polite.

Reasonable.

Unintentional.

But in tribunal, that won’t protect you.

And the most common bias claims?

They don’t come from pay gaps or glass ceilings.

They come from phrases like these:

➊ “I just need someone reliable.”

Said after rejecting someone who asked for flexible hours.

↳ Who decides what ‘reliable’ looks like?

Usually someone with no caring responsibilities.

That’s where indirect sex discrimination creeps in.

➋ “She’s great, but not ready yet.”

Ready for what? And compared to who?

↳ If there’s no objective benchmark, you’re not assessing readiness.

➌ “We don’t have a policy, but we make remote work work.”

So... it depends who’s asking?

↳ Inconsistency = discrimination risk.

Especially when one gets approved and another doesn’t -

With no written criteria.

➍ “He just doesn’t seem like a culture fit.”

↳ Culture fit is often a proxy for sameness.

And sameness excludes;

Neurodivergent.

Disabled.

Black.

Working class.

Women.

These phrases don’t just sound outdated.

They expose your blind spots.

And they cost careers, credibility, and claims.

Because you don’t have to mean it for it to be discriminatory.

📣 Which phrase have you heard recently that made you stop and think?
